Hawaii - A Voice for Sovereignty is a documentary by photojournalist Catherine Bauknight that explores who owns Hawaii and examines the culture and how it relates to the land rights of the indigenous Hawaiians.   The land deeds issued to Hawaiians by Royal Patents versus the same land claimed by developers and plantation owners since the takeover by the U.S. in 1893 are at the forefront of this documentary.  In rare interviews, native Hawaiians reveal that their economic, cultural, and social future depends on the resurgence of their Hawaiian human rights and access to the land owned by them and their ancestors. The goal of the Hawaiians is to become a sovereign nation as stated in the Akaka Bill.  The documentary is intended to raise awareness of the issues of the native Hawaiians through screenings at international festivals and public television.
